The Maxxum 5 SLR packs high-level AF technology, powerful film drive, fast shutter speeds, and a multitude of creative features into the world's smallest and lightest camera body.
POWER AND PERFORMANCE IN THE WORLD'S SMALLEST SLR*1 How powerful can a compact, lightweight SLR be? How simply can diverse features be presented? How can a single SLR camera satisfy someone starting out in photography and yet be a valuable tool for experienced photographers? Minolta's Maxxum 5 has the answer. Drawing on concepts and technologies from the groundbreaking Maxxum 7, this SLR packs high-level AF technology, powerful film drive, fast shutter speeds, and a multitude of creative features into the world's smallest and lightest*1 camera body. Sophisticated performance has never been this easy to use. The Maxxum 5 brings contradictions into harmony.
The Maxxum 5 was built to offer the highest level of AF performance in its class. The world's fastest AF speed in its class*2 and Predictive Focus Control assures effortless focusing. The 7-point AF system with a center cross-hair sensor allows flexible framing. Also featured for the first time in this class, the viewfinder has LED-illuminated superimposition technology, which indicates the point of focus to confirm the target is in focus. inolta's external flash units with high-speed sync (HSS). Light metering is effortless and accurate with a sophisticated metering system that includes 14-segment Honeycomb-Pattern and spot metering for ambient light, and ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) for flash.*4 Also relying on traditional photographic technology, a depth-of-field preview function has been added to support critical photographers. The metal lens mount adds reliability.
Although packed with sophisticated features, the camera's operation is effortless thanks to automated functions and well laid-out controls.
Main Features:
Highest Level of Autofocus Performance in Its Class The Maxxum 5 was built to offer the highest level of AF performance in its class. Whether the subject is moving or stationary, the world's fastest AF speed in its class*2 combined with Predictive Focus Control assures effortless focusing. The 7-point AF system with a center cross-hair sensor allows flexible framing. The selected local focus area in the viewfinder is illuminated by an LED.
Responsive Autofocus Topping its Class with the World's Fastest*2 AF Speed The responsive autofocus with the world's fastest*2 AF speed in its class ensures important moments will not be lost. The exceptional autofocus performance is achieved by a high-speed microcomputer, a refined algorithm, and improved CCD control. The autofocus drive motor quickly accelerates and decelerates the lens movement. Even random motion can be tracked effortlessly right up to the moment the shutter releases with the Predictive Focus Control; its performance has been tripled from the Maxxum XTsi, and is among the top in its class.
Wide Focus Area Utilizes the 7-Point AF System with a Center Cross-Hair Sensor to Assure Flexible Composition The new 7-Point AF System is employed in the wide focus area. The sensors are laid out to the rule of thirds and work in unison so the photographers can flexibly position the subject within the wide focus frame to obtain an aesthetically balanced image. The cross-hair sensor in the center guarantees precise focus regardless of vertical or horizontal subject contrast. In continuous AF, photographers can completely leave subject tracking to the 7-Point AF System and simply concentrate on the viewfinder image.
LED-Illuminated Superimposition Technology Visually Supports AF Operation The Maxxum 5 incorporates an LED-illuminated superimposition method to indicate a selected local focus area. When using the wide focus frame, one of the seven local focus areas will be illuminated by an LED to indicate the point of focus, allowing photographers to confirm the target is in focus.
Focus Area Selection for Flexible Composition Switching between the wide focus area and the local focus areas can be simply done by pressing the spot AF button. The local focus areas can be individually selected using both the spot AF button and the control dial, allowing photographers to select a specific local focus area, enhancing freedom in composition; off-center subjects can be singled out without the need to recompose. This can be valuable when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
AF Modes -- Automatic, Single-shot, and Continuous The Maxxum 5 incorporates three AF modes: single-shot, continuous, and automatic. The automatic AF mode determines whether the subject is moving or still and automatically selects either single-shot or continuous AF.
Eye-Start Automation Eye-start Automation activates autofocus and autoexposure simply by bringing the camera to the eye. With this one quick action, the camera starts working so photographers will not miss important moments.
Powerful Performance In the World's Smallest and Lightest*1 Body The Maxxum 5 boasts a top shutter speed of 1/4000 second, maximum drive speed of 3 frames per second,*3 but is housed in a body smaller and lighter than any other SLR in the world.*1 It can handle various exposure conditions and subject movement, and captures impressive pictures right out of the bag.
Power for Creative Shooting
1/4000 s Shutter Speed, 1/125 s Flash-Sync Speed - The Maxxum 5 goes beyond the limits of compactness and powerful performance. Although the world's smallest,*1 the Maxxum 5 has achieved a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 second. This top shutter speed can freeze motion, or allow the use of a large aperture in under strong light to create a shallow depth of field for portraiture. The maximum flash-sync speed of 1/125 second tops the standard 1/90 second in this class.
3 fps*3 Continuous Advance Speed - A maximum continuous advance speed of 3 frames per second,*3 up from 2 frames per second in the Maxxum 505si Super, allows photographers to catch fast, unfolding action.
Easy to Pack and Handle
The World's Smallest and Lightest Body*1 - The camera's powerful performance is packaged in the world's smallest, lightest body*1 so photographers can instantly act on a creative impulse. At the sight of a mesmerizing landscape or the beaming smile of family and friends, the moment can be capture swiftly without being bogged down by bulky and heavy equipment. The camera comfortably fits in the hands. The creation of the world's smallest body is achieved by new clear viewfinder optics, a compact shutter unit, and a space-efficient mechanical layout.
Extensive Features Although compact, the Maxxum 5 is loaded with extensive features. A clear, bright viewfinder screen and depth-of-field preview makes monitoring images easy. Advanced exposure and flash metering technologies automatically provide optimum results, which can be combined with exposure compensation, bracketing, and multiple exposures. The 14 custom functions allow the camera operations to be set to the individual preferences of the photographer.
Clear, Bright Viewfinder Images With a magnification of 0.75X, the clear, bright viewfinder makes manual focusing easy, especially with slow telephoto lenses. The focusing screen has a spherical acute matte usually found in the higher-end models.
Depth-of-Field Preview Photographers can evaluate the depth of field at a given aperture before the picture is taken. This is especially useful to check that the subject and background will both be sharp when using a small aperture, or see the extent of the depth of field in macro photography.
14-Segment Honeycomb-Pattern Metering and Spot Metering The 14-segment Honeycomb-Pattern metering delivers optimum exposures time after time. The spot-metering mode offers precise control over exposure metering. The viewfinder's Ev scale assists the photographers to evaluate the exposure compensation and show the difference between the metered exposure and the set exposure in manual mode. The Ev scale and the spot-metering area can be used to determine the brightness range of the scene by displaying the difference between the required exposure for the subject and the relative luminance of any area in the scene.
Exposure Compensation, Bracketing, and Multiple Exposure The advanced exposure technology can be combined with a variety of exposure controls. Exposure can be compensated up to ±3 Ev in 0.5 increments. To ensure the optimum exposure for high contrast scenes, three brackets can be made either in 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, or 1.0 Ev increments. The multiple-exposure mode overrides the camera's automatic frame advance to allow an unlimited number of exposures on a single frame.
ADI Flash Metering The ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering employs the distance encoders in Minolta's D lenses to calculate the flash exposure. With the camera's built-in flash, the ADI flash metering combines distance information with TTL flash metering to provide precise flash exposures. When using Minolta's powerful D flash units, the ADI flash metering employs a pre-flash to minimize the influence with background and subject reflectance.
High-Speed Sync (HSS) The Maxxum 5 is compatible with the HSS function in flash units. HSS allows the camera to use shutter speeds up to 1/4000 s. This allows more control between the ambient light exposure and the flash exposure, particularly under bright lighting conditions. HSS is valuable when making portraits outdoors; large apertures can be selected to achieve a shallow depth of field to separate the subject from the background.
Wireless/Remote Off-camera Flash With Minolta program flash units, the Maxxum 5 offers flexible wireless/remote off-camera flash control. Photographers can experiment with lighting techniques without the usual tangle of cords and connectors. Using the built-in flash as a fill light, the ratio flash function controls the flash units to give a lighting ratio of 2:1. With Program Flash 5600HS(D) and 3600HS(D), the flash can synchronize to the maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 second.
14 Custom Functions The Maxxum 5 is the only SLR in its class to offer 14 custom functions. Photographers can tailor the camera settings to suit their preferences.
Metal Lens Mount The metal lens mount adds reliability.
Effortless and Worry-Free Operation Although feature-laden and compact, the well placed controls and automated features makes the Maxxum 5 easy to use.
Function Dial and Push Buttons With an easy to use control layout, novices will learn how to use the camera quickly, and advanced photographers will find the operation intuitive. Push buttons for basic functions are located around the top of the grip, allowing quick and direct access to program-reset, self-timer/remote control, drive modes, and subject programs. On theleft side, more advanced functions are clearly arranged on the function dial. A multitude of settings can be made using a single operational pattern with the function dial, function button, and control dial. Three autofocus and four exposure modes, bracketing, multiple exposure, wireless/remote off-camera flash, and 14 custom functions can be set with the function dial.
Simple Back Cover Opening and Worry-Free Film Chamber Lock The push button type back-cover release makes it easy to open the Film-chamber door. The film chamber lock saves film from being ruined by inadvertently opening the back cover. Once loaded, the back cover is locked until the film is rewound.
Subject Program Selection Subject program selection gives beginning photographers the ability to control the camera according to the subject without requiring a working knowledge of shutter speeds and apertures. Simply selecting one of the five icons on the data panel optimizes the camera's controls to the subject. There are five modes available: portrait, landscape, close-up, sports action, and night portrait.
Audio Signals When selected, audio signals indicate when autofocus is confirmed, counts down the self-timer period, and indicates the release of the shutter with the IR remote control.
