You might be asking yourself right now, “What’s so special about a Hydro Flask® and why should I drop my hard-earned cash on yet another reusable water bottle?”
So let’s start with a simple science lesson.
Everything that has matter conducts heat, including water, air, plastic, aluminum, and stainless steel.
A vacuum is created when all of the air is removed from a sealed object. In other words, a vacuum is a space that is empty of matter, and each Hydro Flask® contains a vacuum seal between two walls of food-grade 18/8 stainless steel.
(If you’ve already figured out that a vacuum is a terrible heat conductor because it’s composed of almost nothing, you’re way ahead of “the other guys.”)
Our patent-pending double-wall vacuum insulation means that the temperature outside a Hydro Flask® has a very hard time affecting the temperature of whatever you might put in it. The best part is that this is a two-way street; whether you’ve got hot or chilled liquids inside of your Hydro Flask®, the internal temperature won’t affect the temperature of the container in your hand. That means no blistered fingers with your daily cup of Joe, and no troublesome sweat rings—from your bottle of ice water. Hydro Flasks® are pretty amazing, but we can’t make guarantees about individual personal hygiene practices!

8/8 Stainless Steel
The following is an explanation of the chemical properties of our beloved Hydro Flasks®. If it’s enough for you just to know that they’re the best reusable drinking bottle you’ll ever own, then you’re dismissed. If you need more scientific proof to convince you, then read on!
At Hydro Flask®, all of our bottles are manufactured using 18/8 stainless steel. So what the heck does 18/8 mean? It indicates the quality of the stainless steel and refers specifically to the percentages of chromium (18%) and nickel (8%) added to provide the anti-rust/staining properties that carbon steel lacks on its own.
There are different grades of stainless steel available, with the numbers denoting their quality. Higher numbers indicate more corrosion-resisting properties, while lower numbers denote the inferior characteristics that lead to the aforementioned staining.
At the lower end, steel must contain at least 10.5% chromium to be called stainless. 18% chromium is the standard for top grade when used in flatware or cutlery, so almost all high-quality flatware has an 18/8 composition and is dubbed “food grade.” Chromium adds hardness and brightness to stainless steel, making it the source of the metal’s shine, and nickel is added to prevent corrosion by enhancing the surface layer that chromium creates.
18/8 stainless steel is the preferred material wherever food or beverages are concerned because it does not affect flavor, either by adding any metallic taste of its own, or by retaining any flavor from the previous foodstuffs with which it came into contact. This is a function of the combination of chromium and nickel, which creates a non-porous surface that inhibits the growth of bacteria. Bacteria, which are the cause of odors, like to cling to porous surfaces where they can thrive. At the first sign of soapy water, any bacteria that have dried onto the surface of 18/8 stainless steel are swept cleanly away.

The hazards of BPA have long been suspected, though confirmed only as recently as 2006. It has been shown to contribute to hazardous conditions such as developmental toxicity, carcinogenic effects, heart disease, diabetes, neurotoxicity, and abnormally high levels of certain liver enzymes. It has also been linked to obesity, cancer and possible brain damage.
The Low Down on Plastic Bottles
By now you’d think everyone has heard the message that plastic bottles are bad for the planet, and that everyone is reducing their consumption of these little enviro-bombs as much as possible. You’d be wrong.
It is estimated that only 20% of plastic water bottles in America are recycled each year. This is an astoundingly low percentage when you consider that bottled water outsells milk and, despite the best efforts of college kids everywhere, has nearly overtaken beer sales.
In a national survey in 2007 it was revealed that as many as 72% of Americans don’t know that plastic is an oil-based product, and this same survey revealed that 40% of U.S. citizens believe plastic biodegrades when it gets to “wherever it goes.” Well, “wherever it goes” is roadsides, landfills, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—a floating mass in the North Pacific Ocean created by global currents and made up of over three million tons of plastic debris. This island of junk covers an area bigger than Texas!
Plastic bottles are also bad for our health. In early 2010 the FDA declared that some plastics contain the toxin Bisphenol A (BPA). More testing is currently underway, but BPA has already been linked to numerous health maladies. And it’s not just found in plastic bottles, either. Aluminum bottles, as well as some steel bottles, are sometimes lined with resins that can leach BPA into the beverages they hold.
